Erika v Donald Trump: Cutting the Baby in Half
Doge's Palace in Venice depicts the Biblical story with a three-dimensional sculpture. Renaissance masters have taken the gift of imagination and a paintbrush to remind us of a puzzling event which required profound wisdom. Which woman is the real birth mother of the baby?

In the final minutes of a five-hour memorial service for Charlie Kirk the audience experiences a "cut the baby in half" moment. Does that baby belong to Erika or does it belong to President Trump? The widow tells us that she forgives the man who assassinated her husband in brutal manner. The POTUS firmly lets us know he hates his opponents.

Let me make a quiet suggestion. That baby belongs to all of us.
Years ago, I listened to a minister deliver the eulogy for a man who was snatched from the bundle of the living because of the violent actions of another man. In strong voice, he preached a message of forgiveness; told the grieving that they must forgive because Christ forgave us. It was a large tray of warmed marshmallow goo, but I wasn't reaching for the S'mores on that particular day. S'mores take seven minutes to make - start to finish. Grief might last for seven months or seven years. Forgiveness? It is not always the radish seed of faith in a wounded heart. I believe it inappropriate for men of the cloth to play the forgiveness card at a funeral because attendees are in the acute stage of grieving. The Bible should never present as a hammer in the presence of sorrow.
Charlie's widow tells us that she forgives Tyler Robinson. This is a testament to God's grace. As the secondary victim of a crime she shows us her beautiful heart. She is exemplary.
But there are others of us, sheep who have been sheared too closely to the skin too many times, who require a period of God's grace to even come to the point of praying, "God, make me willing to forgive. I want it for my life, but this is the hurdle that cannot be jumped." Place me in the seven year category. I want Tyler Robinson served up cold on a slab and I want it now.
Erika Kirk is a remarkable woman. I wish I had her courage. President Trump is a remarkable man. He does not shy away from a difficult and sensitive topic. His honesty is compelling, and in this particular instant, he pivots to an understanding of the human condition.
So who owns this beautiful baby with the name Forgiveness? Erika owns it. But President Trump also owns it. And in his own way, he brought a bit of relief for those who are on the path of forgiveness but have not yet arrived at their destination. He relieved more than a few of the added burden of guilt for being unable to forgive the incomprehensible.
May God continue to bless Erika Kirk. And may He continue to bless our President.

I wouldn't be able to forgive this soon.
ReplyDeleteBTW, Charlie and Erika were married in 2021. Only four years!
