HPV Vaccinations in Oaxaca, Mexico
"El que tiene el polvo de Mexico en su corazon no lo puede quitar", is a true statement. I love Mexico.
"Cancion Mixteca" which was written to honor Oaxaca and their Mixtec population is a classic song.
"O tierra del sol, suspiro por verte." The Mixtec are one of nine indigenous tribes populating Oaxaca valley and the surrounding mountains.
I lined up in sixth grade at the local public school in Oaxaca and received the BCG vaccination. I still have a small keloid formation because it was not placed into the deltoid muscle, but up higher, almost on the shoulder blade.
Catching up on the news today, I took note that 34,150 school age Oaxacan children received the HPV vaccine this week. Did this make the U.S. news? I dunno.

Since 2016, Gardasil 9 has been the only HPV vaccine offered in the U.S.
"Over 100 million doses of HPV vaccine were distributed in the United States from June 2006 through December 2017." Looking at the VAERS data, 22 percent of the reports out were related to unsafe vaccine storage. I worry about unsafe storage and handling in a place like Oaxaca. And my guess is that reactions, even if reported out, are not part of the VAERS collection data base. Access to medical care is scarce in places like Oaxaca.

I am not anti-vaccine. Our sons had the regularly scheduled childhood vaccinations. I believe the traditional panel of vaccines are safe and have proven efficacy. When the boys were much older, we opted for the Hep B vaccine.
As to ( what I assume is) Gardasil 9 and mass vaccination of children in just one state, I harbor a concern. What are the product safety measures in place prior to vaccine administration? What is the rate of side effects? Are corridors of information and resources in place for post-inoculation issues? And does VAERS receive/archive any data from our vaccine efforts abroad?
What is hidden and what is in the light?
When I was a child in Oaxaca my lovely parents would take us high into the Sierra Madre mountains as they performed missionary work. Red cords were tied around bellies of mothers in labor to ward off evil spirits. Babies sported garlic necklaces to ward off the same. Superstitions prevailed. A missionary couple adopted a blind baby. Born with sight, the mother had applied lime juice and salt and topped it off with hot pepper juice to his eyes to "cure" an eye infection. Beto never regained his vision. But he is married and thriving today because of the love and concern offered by this American man and his wife.
So I worry. The article in Spanish unsettled me.
Robert F Kennedy Jr. is attempting to curb the appetite of our pharmaceutical giants. They just take their appetites elsewhere, freighting and offloading their products across the globe. The concern is the lack of robust regulatory policies and measures abroad to ensure children's safety. Is this program in Oaxaca a blessing? Or is it a curse? And is an HPV vaccine of the highest priority... or is it just about the money?
Maybe I should just consider pharmaceutical stock options.
