Professionalism within Ranks
When I worked in PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) as part of a large peri-op configuration we hired Jack. When he joined our team, he received the usual "Tammy Swofford" profile, and he was actually an easy read. Such an ossified creature is not hard to manage. A devout Christian, his sense of superiority and entitlement far surpassed his I.Q. There is an easier way to say this, of course. Jack was the average fool.
Every afternoon he would show up with his large black King James version Bible and a dinner he brought from home. Surveying his domain, he would settle into his area ready to do battle with all of the pagans he was forced to work with for his daily bread. His favorite song was probably, "A Mighty Fortress is our God." Mine was, "Jeremiah was a bullfrog."
So heavily was he invested in his self-righteousness that he would even confront me - a rather gentle Christian. His black-and-white was like tar traveling on a searing bolt of lightning. There certainly was no area for gray.
Jack, because he felt we needed a secretary in the evening, would refuse to answer the phone. Once, I counted off sixty rings, just to see if he would cave to the pressure. Nope. There he remained, within reach of the telephone, peacefully reading the Word of God. Having enough of this stupid man, I went all "Sword of the Lord and Gideon" on him. As his evening boss, I forbid him to read his Bible in the common area. "It is not professional, Jack. You are being paid to provide a service, not read the Bible." I ordered him to take his sorry ass to the nurse's lounge. Within less than a year, we were rid of the fool. It wasn't just about the Bible. It was about... everything. Jack - was just the average fool.
This: Is not just about a gay pride flag on a desk. There will be other issues.
