The Nonsensical Aspects of Dewey Decimal 297

Public libraries have scrubbed their shelves of controversial aspects of Qura'nic Studies. I have read excellent synopsis of the four schools of Sunni jurisprudence, selections with intricate math calculations involving the laws of inheritance and division of property, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and the  lovely poetry of of Sir Muhammad Iqbal. My reading has been expansive, and some has proven enjoyable from a scholarly aspect.

I am against the scrubbing of controversial texts because it is censorship.  All should be able to read and consider what Islam has to offer.

There is the nonsense. You will not find it readily available.  It is on my shelf. But you should carefully consider whether Islam makes sense, or if it is historical nonsense.

'Alee ibn Abee Taalib also reported that the Prophet said, "The eye is the drawstring of the anus, so whoever sleeps should make Wudoo."    Collected by Abu Dawood (Sunan Abu Dawud (English translation), vol 1, p. 50, no 203), Ibn Maajah and ad-Daaraqutnee and rated (Hasan) in Irwaa al-Ghaleel, vol. 1, p 148, no. 113.

Essentially, sleep might cause an individual to expel a bit of urine, feces (or flatulence), so the Muslim enters a state of impurity because:  "The eye is the drawstring of the anus...."

The above, and additional nonsense in this book:

Islamic Studies Book: 1  Intermediate Level (Grade Seven) by Abu Meenah Bilal Philips, Tawheed Publications, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 1410 A.H.

It was circulated by The Sisters Association for Dawah in Arlington, Texas.

I have read similar types of reading being taught to elementary students in our local Islamic Schools.  There is nudge toward OCD - and these nudges include how to step into and out of a bathroom (step in with the left and step out with the right foot) and the Du'aa prior to entering a bathroom.

" Allahhumma innee a' oodhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khabaa'ith"

"Oh Allaah, verily I seek refuge in you from all filth and nasty devils."

I love our local Muslim community and I especially love the women and the children.  But I want them to learn how to fully be Americans and I want them to experience human freedom minus fear of any god of retribution.

Devotion to faith should bring human liberty. It should not enslave to issues of how to sleep, and on which side, with the palm under which cheek, how a man is to urinate, or the direction in which the toilet must not face. It should not enslave regarding which shoulder to spit over, nor the correct number of date (fruits) on a plate, nor the exact number of fingers to use when eating from a communal plate of food.

Faith that enslaves is not divine.  It is reduced to practice and a code of conduct, which gives the satisfaction of piety but denies the individual the full expressive function of free moral agency.

I remain the happy, liberty-loving Christian.  I choose Christianity, because it makes sense.
