Canada's al Awlaki

Ousama Alshurafa.  He is a hyphenated Canadian.  A Balkanizing  rhetorician.

Looking back in history to the time after 9/11,  I distinctly remember that Adam Gadahn was a clown. His little chats were definitely in the category of sleep aides.   But Sheikh Anwar al Awlaki?   He absolutely terrified me the first time I listened to one of his talks.

Ousama Alshurafa reminds me of Sheikh Anwar al Awlaki.   And Canada must decide.  They must decide quickly.

The problem with tethering goats is that you awaken to a November 5th, 2009 at 1:34 p.m.  And then you trot out the thirteen body bags and  32 stretchers.  One tethered goat managed to get his message to the wild and free goat. The result was absolutely disastrous for Fort Hood, Texas.

Ousama Alshurafa is definitely a tethered goat.  And with an audience of three million he also represents as a honey trap for Canada's intelligence community.   Intelligence greed would say in cavalier manner, "Let it play".   But security would demand he be stopped in his tracks.

For his part, he crows, "... how powerful one single voice can be.... truth does not need a boarding pass to travel... the power and reach of a voice...."

And in what should be a self-fulfilling prophecy, we have a delicious solution.   I believe in the concept of a restricted digital space for Islamic terror recruiters such as Ousama Alshurafa.  He only has a "powerful voice"  because he is afforded a platform. His boarding pass is a digital age.  And his weapon is a microphone.  His "truth" does not need permission to travel - because he is allowed to freely recruit across the web.  The "power" and the "reach" of his voice is because of a digital miracle.

We need a carefully constructed and unassailable suite of laws which are extremely narrow in scope, seldom used, but deployed against the one individual who is a one-man domestic ThreatCon.

Restricted Digital Space still allows Alshurafa to access the internet to shop on Amazon, order a pizza, or pay his bills.  It allows him access to respond to e mails sent in official capacity - or to wish his mother a Happy Birthday.   But what the Restricted Digital Space does not allow, is for voice amplification and magnification to a growing audience.

Ousama Alshurafa will still have Freedom of Expression.  He can open his mouth 24/7 and say whatever he damn well pleases.  He may stand on a street corner and shout at the top of his lungs and hand out pamphlets.  He can seek out speaking engagements at area mosques. (I doubt they want him.)  He can hold a meeting in a park with the proper permit.  But he loses his digital platform - it is not necessarily collapsed into the envelope for Freedom of Expression; rather an adjunct to free speech which is not necessary for free speech.

Canada.  You do not have a lot of time.  Really.  You do not. You are not dealing with an influencer.  You are dealing with a recruiter. Place him under guidelines for a restricted digital space.  Or sweat it out looking at your watches.

24 Nov.  Update to post for educational purposes.

Jihad Bil Lisan is jihad by the tongue.  Jihad Bil Qalam is Jihad by the pen.  The recruiter is engaged in the former activity.
