On the Streets of America

CPR and medical care for the two soldiers ambushed and shot today by an Afghan national.

Problematic is the female soldier was shot in the chest and the head.  Her male counterpart was shot in the head.

Blood loss, changes in intracranial pressure, and most likely a secondary diagnosis of anoxic encephalopathy will leave both victims in a vegetative state, should they survive the catastrophic injuries.

In the ICU they will exhibit decerebrate posturing and possibly oculocephalic reflex (or doll's eyes).

The families might take heart and tell the nurse "She gripped my hand!"   It is a primitive reflex. It means there is brain damage.  Can they release the grip?  That is the question.

Neuro trauma is not for the faint of heart.  I have worked extensively in neuro ICU.

Regarding the female victim.  Is she a mother? If so, how old are her children?

The male victim.  Is he a father? How old are his children?

Had they called their families yet to wish them a Happy Thanksgiving?

We have a problem.  Really.  We do.
