Hiroshima in a Box

It is time to look at the elephant, the bird, and the rock.  The cockroach?  It is just in the box because cockroaches survived the radiation from the bombing of Hiroshima.

Years ago - I sat across from a Palestinian man who lived in Israel as a child.  His ancestral home was part of the land which is now occupied by the Knesset.  His later childhood was spent in Jordan after his family was expelled from the land.  He still had his UNRWA  card neatly folded in his wallet; and it was my privilege to hold it in my hand.  But what was more important - was what was within his very fine skull.  Trained as an attorney in Damascus, I remain indebted to him for his generosity of thought.  And  I am most grateful to him for walking me through the story of a nuclear attack which is laid out in the Surah titled,  "The Elephant".

Surah Al Fil has only five ayat and the paragraph can be read in less than a minute.  This Surah is the synoptic version of what happened a few weeks before  the birth of Prophet Muhammad and it is also known as "The Year of the Elephant".

The Abbysinian (Ethiopian) Viceroy of Yemen led an army of 60,000 warriors and approximately a dozen elephants to destroy the Ka'bah.  If you care to read about this event it can be found in, "The Sealed Nectar (Ar-Raheeq Al-Makhtum) Biography of the Noble Prophet (p 52).

In this selection, "... Allah loosed upon them birds in flights, hurling against them stones of baked clay and made them like green blades devoured.  These birds were very much like swallows and sparrows, each carrying three stones; one in its beak and two in its claws.  The stones hit Abraha's men and cut their limbs and killed them."

I was told the clay pellets were isotopes.  And this was the first recorded nuclear attack in history.  One thing which is interesting to me as a networking journalist is how Islamic social scientists work very hard to upgrade the stories of Islam with the tafseer (commentary) to modernize text to reflect scientific advances.  This is done to increase the credibility of the text.  I suppose one day I will be told about string theory being in the Qur'an.  smile

One of the best "upgrades" to the aforementioned incident can be found in this English translation of the Qur'an - which next to the one by Yusuf Ali - remains my favorite for research.

The commentary is well-written, and on page 878 you will find these remarks regarding the attack by the birds:

"In the meantime swarms of birds appeared carrying stones in their beaks and claws and showered these on the troops. Whoever was hit would start disintegrating... Ibn Abbas says that the flesh and blood flowed like water and bones in the body became visible."

My Palestinian companion walked me through several additional words which might denote a nuclear attack.  But he made it clear that it was isotopes being carried by the birds.

A few months ago when there was the back-and-forth bombing between Israel and Tehran, I took note of a graphic which threatened Israel.  A flock of birds in flight carried what looked like diamonds of light between their beaks.  My sense of unease caused me to send it to the desk of an analyst on the east coast.

For many years now,  I have tracked things like this which are placed in the digital space:

I am looking for signal.  And I have looked for signal for many years now.

When Al Qassam Brigades launched "Operation Stones of Baked Clay" in 2012 - I took note.  "Hijarat Sijil" may not have involved isotopes; but it is possible the narrative attached to Surah Al Fil was both understood and wished for by military planners.

In the past, Tehran has also given a name to one of their missiles which reflects the glorious story of Surah Al Fil.  The Iranian Sejjil is a medium-range ballistic missile.  In Persian, sejjil means "brimstone".

So peeking into the box today: an elephant, a bird, and a rock.  This is your signal.

Welcome to Hiroshima.
