Syria: The Narrative Crumbles
CENTCOM informs. Swofford asks, "Why now?"
The journalism questions always apply to any story: Who, what, when, where, why and why now? The answer to "why now" is that prisons doors are being opened and ISIS fighters are being released inside Syria. And in Raqqa, the AQ/ISIS black flag is waved:
President Trump weighs in on the Kurds:

But what is happening in Raqqa right now? Is this about oil... about money? Or did you already drink from the straw of disinformation?
I just watched a video of unarmed Kurdish women in Raqqa being gunned down. It is not enough that in death their features are smeared with their own blood. One soldier places a muddy boot on the face of one woman and covers the blood with a layer of mud. Can I post the video? Of course. But why would I do so? Why would I allow one final indignity against the many women who lost their lives?
And the man below? He displays a lock of hair taken from a murdered Kurdish girl. He is excited to display his trophy.
It is a grave strategic miscalculation - what has been done in Syria. What is happening on the ground is far removed from the narratives peddled in the West. The Christians, the Druze, and the Alawites have already tasted of the terror. I have followed this story for months. Now it is the turn of the Kurds to confront the bloodlust of a self-proclaimed president who has flooded his own military ranks with madmen like himself.
There is no red line for Al Julani - a man who has also beheaded others in the name of his god. A primitive man wields raw power with the force of fear and the fear of force. The women who were not killed in Raqqa will now be moving along the vibrant corridors of human trafficking of women and little girls who call Syria home. Why do you think the soldiers are taking pictures of the girls with their cell phones? They are merely selling livestock.
Who cares? Swofford always cares.
