My Heart is with the Sudanese

Most will be unaware of this tragedy in the Sudan.   General Abdel Fattah al Burhan has traveled to the region to console the families.   My prayers are extended to those who have suffered such a devastating loss.

On Wednesday, 11/2/2026, sorrow descended upon Deem Al-Qarai in River Nile State, Shendi Locality, and upon Tayba Al-Khawad in Al-Matama Locality, due to the sinking of a boat carrying 36 people bound together by kinship, permanent geography, and the inherited social qualities passed down from their forefathers and extended to their grandchildren in maintaining family ties through joys and sorrows.

The boat’s journey was to fulfill a condolence duty on the western bank of the Nile in the Tayba Al-Khawad area. On the return trip came the tragedy and the great calamity: the Nile swallowed 25 dear ones from among our people and our kin from Deem Al-Qarai and Tayba Al-Khawad. Eleven people survived the drowning, yet they did not escape the horror of the incident and the sight of those they lost before their very eyes in moments faster than the blink of an eye. These were moments difficult for them more than anyone else, because they were unable to do anything—not out of helplessness, but due to the severity of the situation. The grief extended to all the families of Deem Al-Qarai and Tayba Al-Khawad, and to River Nile State in general, as its citizens hurried from its south, west, east, and farthest north—Lake Al-Sumoud and the Manasir of duty—to offer condolences and comfort to the families of the martyrs. This had a profound effect in alleviating the sorrow and giving a sense of security and reassurance that the families of the martyrs were not alone; behind them stood seven localities with their villages, towns, omdas, sheikhs, and officials, embodying and translating the meaning of solidarity, loyalty, and support.
