President Trump's Costly Temper Tantrum
The Islamic Republic of Iran is a stable nation which has had a peaceful transition of power since 1979. It has been led and represented by only two leaders in the forty-six years of its existence. There is a line of succession. And that position of leadership has been filled again.
There was no imminent nuclear threat. Unable to coerce Iran into negotiations on his terms (isn't that what it always is?) the POTUS threw a massive temper tantrum. He would teach them a lesson! Put the hurt on them!
Who is crying now?
The first blunder was imagining it a great idea to begin a bombing campaign in daylight hours when schools are in session. The second, was to ignore the algorithm for a blast radius meant to hit a nearby Naval installation and not include a primary school in the estimation. One hundred and sixty five little girls, most between the age of 5-7 years lost their lives. I will not post the image of a small arm shredded below the elbow. The image of the graves being dug is true and not AI generated, nor is it "graves in Jakarta". Here is the image of the school.
What about violations of the Geneva Convention?
Sure, I posted about Iran moving drones to Queshm island prior to our attack. But we targeted a water desalination plant which thirty small villages are dependent on for hydration. How many will die of thirst?
On March 7th, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohamed Bagher Ghalibaf stated: "The launch point of any attack will be the target of our response." True to their word, Iran damaged a desalination plant in Bahrain.
How do you feel about a burn center and fourteen medical clinics being reduced to rubble? How many will perish for lack of care and vital medications?
What about the dialysis center in Karaj? It no longer exists.
So if Iran is true to their word - has grandmother made her last will and testament before you drop her off for her latest dialysis appointment? And if your daughter attends a private Catholic all-girls school should you have a concern?
How do you feel about this event? Yes, the target was an oil depot. The women, in a nearby non-military building found themselves impacted by events beyond their control.
Iran continues to target our "eyes in the sky" - our billion dollar radars and other assets like this radar in Jordan.
And the IRGC leadership remains in lock-step. There will be no cease-fire. Why would they even consider such an action? It was an unprovoked attack.
This is not entirely a "just war", because there was no imminent threat. Iran presented as a stable nation and counterbalance in the region. I lean toward a belief that nuclear deterrence in a stable chain of command is greatly preferable to nuclear deterrence in... errr... Chad... the Congo... ya' know, those places where Trump ended major wars.
And if we believe we can achieve "regime change" when our nation blew through four presidencies to see no resolution for change in Afghanistan, I await the proof that we can accomplish it now.
There is the troubling question: Was there not one member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who thought this was a disastrous idea? Not one to push against the volatile temper of our American President?
What President Trump has accomplished is the destabilization of a region, an increased ThreatCon on our soil which will be difficult to manage, the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Iranians and the loss of their jobs in the oil industry, and a future political migraine as borders disintegrate with the overwhelming volume of desperate and hungry Muslims seeking relief from war. Goodwill is gone with the Gulf States. Who wants the ugly American? Even as I write, my dear friend Mohamed Elhassan is desperate to leave Qatar with his family. They have resided there for years.
What Trump has accomplished in two short weeks is the destabilization of global economies, the disruption of American business interests in the Gulf states, and the slow slide into a recession. We are not safer, nor is the world safer for his actions. And I have sent a small smoke signal into the analytical community regarding one thing which must be done, if we are to see any de-escalation.
It was all so unnecessary.
