Europe: Disastrous Consequences when Governments Fetishize Migrants

We all remember Germany during the summer of 2015.  The Germans were the poster child for generosity.  And as we say in Texas, "God bless 'em."

Prime Minister Angela Merkel went about hugging asylum seekers and assuring Germans that "we can manage this....".  She practically sounded like Mother Theresa.  But she was not introducing a small footprint where dying lepers could be bathed and receive food and last rites. She was accepting of a calamity.  Because for hosting nations to survive, the acceptance of migrants must be orderly, and slowly paced; in small increments and with the ability for the taxpayers to temporarily provide relief for those arriving.  Citizens must not be displaced from their neighborhoods to accommodate migrants, housing shortages must not ensue, and schools and medical resources must not be overwhelmed.  Entrance must also be granted for those best able to contribute to greater society, and more importantly, a welcome extended only toward those who show a willingness to adapt to the language, culture, and traditions of the host.

Three years later, this disastrous social experiment introduced us to the sad woman with the defeated look who was forced into agreements with multiple nations to wheelbarrow these same individuals to distant shores.  PM Merkel failed in her primary duty.  That duty, was to safeguard the interests of the citizens.

I am not sure how the EU managed to pull off a campaign which created a canvas for excessive and irrational devotion toward a tsunami of arriving migrants.  But somebody needs to be on sticks for insisting that we fetishize migrants.

Hungary decided they no longer needed PM Viktor Orban.  And yet, he is the one who championed that Hungary belonged to Hungarians and erected barriers to safeguard the interests of the citizens.  Hungary remains prosperous today because they are not burdened with excessive migration.

The Hungarians voted him out.  And now, they take to the streets, like the vanquished citizens which they will soon become.

I think back to my own grandparents.  They raised my father in a car until he was three years of age. They then managed to build a small wooden caravan which was attached to the back of their vehicle.  They spent their days doing menial labor.  And when my father was five years old, he came under a roof called "home" for the first time in Wichita, Kansas.  Nobody cared to fetishize my father - no more that we have granted superstar status to so many of our ancestors who toiled long and hard on the land. Some never achieved the American Dream.  But their children thrived and their third generation just might be doing all right.

So why do we fetishize migrants now? Why do we afford them a status which was never offered to my grandparents? I could share with you regarding their hardships.  But they would find it distasteful and even dishonorable.  Proud.  Americans.  And damn proud to have a shot at life.

Why are we doing this to ourselves?  This has nothing to do with compassion.  We are a compassionate people in the West.  But we cannot take in the seven billion people who live outside our Western borders.  Taking in even a million in a compressed window of time brings harm to any given nation and erodes societal homeostasis which finds anchor in traditions and prosperity.

It is time we take a step back and understand that we have been duped.  Jacob has taken our birthright. And we gave it up for a bowl of red lentils spooned into a cracked bowl of ideas.  It is time we insist on orderly migration. It is time to close loopholes for asylum seekers.

And yes - it is time that we extend a hand.  But that hand, is best extended outside our borders.
