Part I: Touching Stephen Ogilvie's Face. Touching the Face of Islam
There will be no "Angel's Glow" for Stephen Ogilvie. There is no happy ending.
If his medical team is able to extubate him and remove ventilatory support, it is possible he sustained anoxic encephalopathy due to the severity of his injures; and it will make no real difference whether he is "tubed" or free of mechanical support.
I have cared for individuals capable of breathing without assistance but their eyes did not track, and movements consisted of either decorticate or decerebrate posturing. And these families were ecstatic when their relative could grasp their hand. "He gripped my hand! He must be getting better!"
But it is just a primitive reflex based on a feedback loop.
If Stephen Ogilvie actually awakens to a state of consciousness, he will awaken to blackness. One eye and a socket were carved out by his assailant. The other eye received a blinding injury. Already hearing impaired, it is possible he has suffered greater degradation and ability to process simple sounds.
He will awaken to darkness, and possibly a vacuum of sound. And if cognizant, there will be the knowledge that he has pain running through his back, across his face, coursing through his nose which has been surgically repaired, and along the circumference of his stapled neck.
Hadid Alodid was a police officer in Khartoum. In Belfast - he attempted to behead a man.
