Sleep Bank: III


"They have awakened.  They have awakened to the fact that we have taken their liberty."  The mood was subdued.  The Group of Five made only brief eye contact as they shared their findings. 

One member took his palm and flashed an image onto the screen.

"It began with the Christians.  It is their God who first stated to them in no uncertain terms, 'You are free'. The God of the Judeo-Christian tradition has destroyed our plan with three small words." (Genesis 2:16)

"We made a mistake.  In giving an allowance for extra sleep, the Christian community has become a beehive of zealotry.  They attend church seven days a week.  The fools actually believe the words of Jesus Christ.  We do not understand Jesus.  Their belief is not based on understanding. It is based on trust.

But in other groups,  we are seeing bizarre displays of human behavior in the quest for sleep.  Individuals are feigning illnesses.  Worse yet, we are seeing a statistical anomaly of self-mutilations.  Fingers chopped off. Infections allowed to fester instead of being treated. The goal is hospitalizations. The goal is an eight hour sleep cycle.  Pets are being abused.  And then abused again."

A second member took his palm and flashed an image onto his screen.

"Birth rates have climbed to the highest levels in a century.  Citizens are shagging like rabbits.  And we are aware of a trend of mothers now breastfeeding until their child practically has a full set of teeth."

The leader of the Group of Five placed his metrics on the screen.  "We are seeing levels of dissent and passive resistance which are increasing substantially.  Parents are home-schooling. They are hiding their children when they come of age.  And this generation of children have been indoctrinated against our program.  It is the worst danger of all, of course.  Because when  citizens begin to think for themselves and attempt to wrest from us the power of coercive control, we lose the advantage of behavioral modification.  It has been important they remain asleep - that they not awaken to the loss of freedom.  

It is frightening. They now grasp the truth.  The Constitution to which they hold is invested with wisdom.  And it reaches out to free the restrained man. They now understand.  Technology, for them, has only one metric: Does it free or does it restrain liberty? They have solved the equation.   They have awakened.  But ultimately, the Christians are to be blamed."

Mohamed Elhassan He is powerful, made up of imperceptible layers.  He was only in his mid-teens when he first heeded the call to political action traveling to the Republic Palace of President Jafar Nimeiri seeking justice for his family.
