The Sleep Bank: I
Glancing at the digital matrix on the palm of his hand, the man checked the time. It was 10:47 p.m. and a bit too early to retire because his work day did not begin until 9 a.m. He was tired. It had been a difficult shift. Looking at his palm, he made a decision. Moving the Sleep Bank Matrix across his ear, he recorded the necessary hieroglyphic. He then moved his palm in front of his eye and scanned his iris. The man then placed the index finger of his left hand onto the matrix on his right hand to finish the information storage process. He knew that an iris scan was sufficient. But the conditioning was merely part of the algorithm. Punching in his sleep cycle to begin at eleven p.m. he would be awakened at four a.m. Exactly at eleven p.m. he was asleep.
In the apartment adjacent to his own, a mother of two children took a moment to repeat the same process but designated two a.m. as the beginning point for sleep. It was summer and the children were on break. She would awaken at seven a.m.
This was the most ordered nation on the planet. There was virtually no crime. The streets were clean. Lawns were nicely manicured. The windows of the homes glistened in the sun. Fences were repaired. And on any given day, home owners could be observed scrubbing down the sidewalks in front of their property. Flowers were watered and gardens bloomed with cerulean blue, cherry red and pale yellow flowers. Towering oak trees reached in placating manner toward the clouds.
Employees would never raise their voices in the workplace. If there were concerns, they were dealt with quietly and efficiently by Human Resources. Lavatories were clean and every toilet flushed twice. There was no graffiti on stall doors. The faucets glistened with the brightness of a Harvest moon. This was the most ordered nation on the planet.
Vehicles on the boulevards were properly registered. There were no broken tail lights and all headlights worked and tires had the proper amount of tread. Commuters were polite. There was no shouting upon the streets. People smiled at police officers and wished them a good day.
The schools were true centers of classical learning. And should there be unruliness, it was only allowed until high school. There was no placement of a Sleep Bank Matrix until the student was of the proper age.
Each day an additional fifteen minutes was added to the Sleep Bank if the citizen had performed in required manner. It was to be appropriated within a seven day cycle or it would be canceled. This social credit system allowed for an additional one hour and forty five minutes of sleep each week, to be used at the discretion of the individual. If an individual attended a house of worship - the Sleep Bank credit allowed an additional fifteen minutes. Most attended worship and chose to use their full two hour credit for one long nap on a day which was free of work.
There were also allowances for a doctor's visit with recuperation at home. More generous allowances were made for hospitalizations. Women who had given birth received adequate consideration and additional sleep cycles were allocated. If the mother was breast-feeding; generous credits were added.
Even family pets received due consideration. Should there be an injury, additional social credits were allowed for the family member providing care for the animal.
This was the most ordered nation on the planet.
