The Sleep Bank: II


The Federation which ruled the most well-ordered nation on the planet  called an emergency summit.  The group of five held the plenary authority for the Sleep Bank.  In fact, it had been five decades since the program had been initiated when the Federation's top psychiatrists, neurologists, social engineers, and secretive alphabet agencies had convened to discuss an ordered society.  One of the top psychiatrists in the nation produced a model for sleep deprivation and human malleability and suggestibility.   Human ingenuity and amoral cunning spear-headed  this technology. Within a decade, the program was ready for research with primates.  The results were less than spectacular.

Fear-mongering and installing anti-social and isolating behaviors were explored during the social experiment COVID.  Adult children had been convinced to disown their parents and not allow them to see their own grandchildren if they refused a "vaccine".  Mask requirements stripped humanity of a smile. And the rapid closure of economic corridors was easily accomplished with financial inducements.  The ad campaigns were ruthlessly deployed and conditioning ensued. "Be safe!  Be safe!"

The Federation was ready to take the next step.  Smart cities were introduced.  Creature comforts and readily available micro-pleasures allowed for increased surveillance and confinement of populations into easily manageable grids.   Research confirmed that certain segments of society would trade liberty for false realities.  Those who were hesitant to exchange emotional treasure for dump heap dreams were also closely tracked.

Finally - society was ready for the Sleep Bank.  The first generation introduced to the Sleep Bank was reactionary.  But by the second generation, the normalization of social credit scores which awarded sleep for standardized behavior had been widely accepted.   And what was really a passive form of torture found residence within what is the most adaptable of all species: mankind.

But the next generation arose.  And with this generation, alarming statistics.
