Frontal Assault Against the United States Constitution
F.B.I. Director Kash Patel spent a full day at the White House preparing subpoenas against reporters from the New York Times. And in what is a frontal assault on the Constitution, the question is not "Who is right?" - but "What is right?"
What is right - is encapsulated in the wording of our Constitution.

The POTUS promised the most transparent administration in our history. Far from it. This particular American President actively attacks the Constitution of the United States with regard to a free press.
When he announced the world's most expensive lemon was being flown to Mildenhall AFB so that our "brave men and women of the military could be the first to see it", he assumed Americans have reptilian brains. Releasing the insulting bullfrog's narrative that a simple "hop" to England has nothing to do with potential security risks attached when our POTUS boards the flight OCONUS, is a completely unbelievable verbalization. And while we certainly did not need New York Times reporters to confirm our suspicions, it is their God-given Constitutional right to release information to the public.

It seems more important to me that the press corps be allowed do their job. And part of that job is to sound the alarm. And when presidential arrogance subjugates national security (the top national security priority is the safeguarding of our President) to a Qatari vanity project - we have a problem.
President Trump wants to reduce the press to ordinary road sweepers. Keep those streets clean of any bad news! And what cannot be swept up must be buried.
Luckily, our traditions regarding freedom of the press are anchored in the writings of Englishmen of note. Building on their philosophical libertarian reasoning, we expanded freedom of expression and of the press to incomparable levels not observed in our greater, modern world.
One of the great apologists for freedom of the press was John Milton. In 1644 he wrote that Truth and Falsehood must be allowed to grapple. (Aereopagitica : A Speech for the Liberty of Unlicensed Printing). Regulation of printing presses was one of the early fights for freedom. Early on, English law began issuing licenses for printers, so that publishers could be censored. Print shops submitted publications to royal officials/censors who could then grant or withhold an imprimatur of approval. This technique was called "restraints".
Jumping forward to the American Courts, in 1963 - Bantam Books Inc v Sullivan the court reiterated (as it has done with consistent frequency over the years) that prior restraint is especially disfavored under the First Amendment. Certainly, (flipping the coin for) post-publication attempts to bully and coerce reporters would fall under the same manner of guidelines with what the court wrote in 1963:
"Any system of prior restraints of expression comes to the Court bearing a heavy presumption against its Constitutional validity."
Team Trump was slapped back on an earlier case. May the slaps continue.

Government always tries to restrict freedom of information. The Constitution stands as guardian against such practices and overreach. Freedom of the press is a fundamental liberty, which if eroded, opens the door to the destruction of all other liberties.
The current administration will not win this fight, and they know it. Their goal is to intimidate and persecute a free press. The New York Times will once again be forced into spending millions of dollars to guard what is Constitutionally enshrined. President Trump wishes to exert sufficient pressure so that self-censorship will prevail.
May the New York Times refuse to grovel and win this latest fight for all of the right reasons. Because if the Qatari "gift" places the POTUS in danger because it is not properly fitted with the standard security features of our made-in-America Air Force One, it is important for the public to know so that sufficient pressure can be applied.
"Those who won our independence knew that fear breads repression; that repression breeds hate; and hate menaces stable government and that the path to safety lies in the opportunity to discuss freely supposed grievances and proposed remedies." Justice Brandeis
My grievance is not with the Qatari government. My grievance is with President Trump for accommodating an offer from the Qatari royal family to accept a new aircraft which may be as reliable as a Denny's Diner regarding quality. It is fitting, that our POTUS has stated this aircraft will find itself quietly retired to his presidential library. Maybe I will order a "Moons over my Hammy" from Denny's Diner tonight. wink
